What is the brand name for this medicine?
Zithromax

What is this medicine used for?
This medicine is used to treat various types of bacterial infections, such as pneumonia or other respiratory conditions such as COPD. This medicine can also by used in patients with cystic fibrosis or patients who may have received an infection while being hospitalized, or who have  bacteria in the blood (bactermia).  In children, this medicine is commonly used to treat ear infections (otitis media), pneumonia, pharyngitis or tonsillitis.

How is this medicine taken?
Follow instructions from your doctor. The suspension or liquid antibiotic should be shaken well before each dose. Take the medicine on an empty stomach, one hour before a meal or two hours after. And remember to finish all medication unless your doctor or pharmacist has advised you otherwise.

What if I miss a dose?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

How is this medicine stored?
Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator above 41 degrees. Do not freeze.

Are there side effects?
The most commonly reported side effects with this medicine include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. If you are experiencing any hearing disturbances or ringing in the ears, tell your doctor.

Are there precautions with this medicine?
If after taking the medicine you develop a rash, hives, difficulty in breathing, or swallowing stop taking the medicine and see a doctor immediately. If you get a small rash from the medicine talk to your doctor. If after taking the medicine for a few days and you don’t see any improvement in your condition, notify your doctor or nurse.

Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
Generally thought to be safe during pregnancy and breast feeding. If you are or plan on becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor to discuss any risks.

Can I take this medicine with other medicines?
The heart medicine digoxin can be increased in your bloodstream when taking this medicine. This can increase side effects from the digoxin. If you are on any of the following medications, carbamazepine (Tegretol), terfenadine, cyclosporine, hexobarbital or phenytoin (Dilantin), there are documented drug interactions. Talk to your doctor before taking these medicines together.

General Information:
Avoid taking aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids together with this medicine. If you take antacids, separate them from your antibiotic dose by at least 2 hours.
