Over the Counter (OTC) Medications

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are those than can be bought without a prescription. While in the past, many OTC drugs were ineffective, now many OTC medicines are highly potent drugs. The consumer should chose OTC drugs wisely.

The best way to assure that an OTC drug is right for you is to discuss your situation with a pharmacist. The pharmacist can evaluate your situation and decide which, if any, OTC drug is appropriate. The choice of OTC products for any condition can be confusing. For instance, hundreds of different products claim effectiveness for colds, flu, allergies, sinus conditions, while they all contain similar ingredients.

Not every condition requires medication treatment. For many mild conditions, such as colds, rest and fluids are just as effective as most OTC products. Take medications only when they are necessary. Never take any OTC medication if there is a chance you are pregnant without first talking with your provider.

Because OTC products may contain potent medications, they may cause side effects. They can worsen one of your medical conditions or cause a drug interaction. Discuss these issues with your pharmacist before purchasing an OTC product.

If you do purchase an OTC product, follow the dosage recommendations closely. If you are treating a small child, discuss the use of the product with your pediatrician. Never give an aspirin-containing product to a child with a fever.

OTC products can be helpful in treating symptoms of certain conditions. If your symptoms continue, see your healthcare provider.
