Monopril (FOSINOPRIL)
What is the brand name for this medicine?
MONOPRIL
What is this medicine used for?
It is indicated mainly for treatment of high blood pressure, and may also be used in certain cases of heart failure.
How does this medicine work?
Fosinopril prevents a chemical reaction that creates a potent blood vessel constrictor, causing the body to retain less sodium and fluids. Net result is a relaxation of arteries, lowering of blood pressure, and increase in heart output, with little change in heart rate.
How is this medicine taken?
May be taken with or without food. Monopril should be taken at the same time every day.
What if I miss a dose?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
How is this medicine stored?
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep away from heat and light.
Are there side effects?
The most common side effects are cough, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and occasionally ringing of the ears, and muscle pain. Also possible are skin rash and gastric disturbances.
If you experience other side effects that are bothersome to you, notify your doctor or pharmacist.
Are there precautions with this medicine?
Sun sensitivity may be increased, so you should wear protective clothing or use sunscreens until your tolerance has been determined. Also, caution is advised if you have any history of liver or kidney disease.
Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
If you suspect that you may be pregnant, talk to your doctor. ACE inhibitors are not recommended for use during pregnancy, due to possible fetal damage. For nursing mothers, Fosinopril is not known to be excreted in breast milk in significant quantities, but should be used with caution. Discuss with your doctor possible risks to your baby while taking this medicine.
Does this medicine interact with other drugs?
Antacids and indomethacin (an arthritic pain medication) can decrease the effects of Fosinopril. Phenothiazine tranquilizers can increase the effects, and the serum levels of digoxin, lithium, and potassium can all be increased if given with this drug. For more specific information on drug interactions, talk to your pharmacist.
General Information:
Can this medicine deplete important minerals or vitamins in my body?
ACE inhibitors have been shown to result in possible depletion of Zinc, leading some prescribers to recommend a Zinc supplement with Fosinopril.
