METRONIDAZOLE

What is the brand name for this medicine?
Flagyl

What is this medicine used for?
This medicine is used for patients who have amebiasis, trichomoniasis (a vaginal infection), skin infections, infectious diarrhea, or intra-abdominal infections.

How does this medicine work?
This medication works by interfering with the bacterial DNA, causing bacterial death.

How is this medicine taken?
It is important that you take this medication at regular intervals and take it until it is all gone. It may be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. Do not drink alcohol while you are on this medication and for at least 24 hours after stopping this medicine because it can cause sever vomiting.

What if I miss a dose?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

How is this medicine stored?
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep away from heat and light.

Are there side effects?
The most common side effects of this medicine are nausea, vomiting, reddish-brown urine, a metallic taste, or tingling in your hands and feet. If you experience side effects that are bothersome to you, notify your doctor or pharmacist.

Are there precautions with this medicine?
You should use this medicine with caution if you have severe kidney disease, liver disease, or a history of seizures. Do not tke this medicine with alcohol.

What about interactions with other drugs?
Possible drug interactions include oral anticoagulants, phenytoin, phenobarbital, and alcohol.  Ask your pharmacist if you are taking any of these medications together.

Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
If you suspect that you may be pregnant, talk to you doctor because this medicine is not safe during the first trimester, but can be used later in pregnancy.  For nursing mothers, this medication is considered generally unsafe and should not be used during breast feeding.

General Information:
Antibiotics such as metronidazole may decrease the amount of “good” bacteria in your intestines needed for normal digestion. A supplement called Probiotic may be recommended to replace the “good” bacteria when you are taking this medication.
