What is this medicine used for?

Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen is a combination narcotic and is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain.

How is this medicine used?

Follow the directions that your doctor has given you; these are printed on your prescription bottle. It is advised to take this medicine with food, to avoid upset stomach. Drink plenty of water with this medicine to avoid constipation.

What if I miss a dose?

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

How is this medicine stored?

Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat and light.

Are there any precautions while taking this medicine?

If you have had a severe allergy to codeine, hydrocodone or oxycodone, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication. Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine. Alcohol can have added side effects such as drowsiness and mental clouding. And, don’t drive unless you know how you react to the medicine. The side effects may affect your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Are there side effects?

Side effects while taking this medicine include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and constipation. If you experience other side effects that are bothersome talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Does this medicine interact with other drugs?

Drug interactions include Cimetidine, which can increase blood levels of hydrocodone/acetaminophen and increase its effects. Antihistamines and sedative medications should also be used with caution because of the additional drowsiness.

Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?

If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the risks versus benefits to your pregnancy. It is not known whether this medicine is excreted in breast milk. If you are breast-feeding or plan to breast feed, check with your doctor about risks to your baby.


General Information:

Do not take over-the-counter products that include acetaminophen while on this medicine, such as Tylenol. If you are not sure which products contain acetaminophen ask your pharmacist. Too much acetaminophen can cause damage to your liver, when taken in large doses, especially if you drink alcoholic beverages daily. If you regularly drink alcohol ask your doctor if this medicine is right for you.
