What is this medicine used for?
This medicine is used for water retention (edema), high blood pressure (hypertension), fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), heart failure and/or kidney failure. Your doctor may prescribe this medicine for other reasons.
How is this medicine taken?
This medicine should be taken with food or milk to avoid stomach upset. This medicine will increase urination and should be taken early in the day.
What if I miss a dose?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
How is this medicine stored?
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep away from heat and light.
Are there side effects?
This medicine can cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, headache, and rash and blurred vision. Talk to your doctor if you experience muscle weakness, cramps, or dizziness. If you experience other side effects that are bothersome to you, talk to your doctor or nurse.
Are there precautions with this medicine?
This medicine may cause your skin to be sensitive to sunlight. Avoid long exposure to the sun and use a sunscreen and protective clothing. Be cautious when sitting up too quickly from a lying down position. Talk to your doctor if you have severe kidney disease before taking this medicine.
Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
If you plan on becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine to weigh the benefits vs the risks to your pregnancy. This medicine is excreted in breast milk. If you plan to breast feed while taking this medicine, talk to your doctor first.
Can I take this medicine with other medicines?
Yes, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other a heart medicine called digoxin. Loss of minerals (potassium, magnesium) from loop diuretics can cause irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias) in patients taking digoxin. The effects of some blood pressure medicines can be increased. Use caution.
