What is this medicine used for?
This medicine is used to treat infections, particularly those found in the sinuses, lower respiratory tract and urinary tract. It also may be used to treat chronic prostate infections, bladder infections, some bone and joint infections, and occasionally for infectious diarrhea.
How is this medicine taken?
This medicine may be taken with or without food. You can take the medicine with food if stomach upset occurs, but no dairy products. The tablets may be crushed if needed. It is recommended that you drink plenty of water while taking this medicine. Do not take this medicine with aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids, iron, zinc or calcium two hours before and after doses.
What if I miss a dose?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
How is this medicine stored?
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep away from heat and light.
Are there side effects?
The most common side effects of this medicine include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, restlessness, and skin rash. Nausea is the most commonly reported side effect.
Are there precautions with this medicine?
Precautions while taking this medicine include increased photosensitivity and possibility of sunburning, and a warning that products containing calcium, iron, or zinc may interfere with absorption of this medicine. If you develop rash, hives, yellow skin or hives, contact your doctor immediately.
What about interactions with other drugs?
If you are taking theophylline, a common bronchodilator, you may experience increased side effects such as headache, nervousness and trouble sleeping This type of antibiotic have also been reported to increase the blood-thinning effects of warfarin. Talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you have further questions.
Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
Talk to your doctor if you plan on becoming pregnant. This medicine should not be used if you are pregnant. This drug may affect bone development in the fetus. Although it is unknown whether this medicine is excreted in breast milk, you should avoid nursing while taking this medicine.
General Information:
Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin may decrease the amount of “good” bacteria in your intestines needed for normal digestion. A supplement called Probiotic may be recommended to replace the “good” bacteria when you are taking this medication.
