What is this medicine used for?
This medicine is used for high blood pressure, the drug is also used for treatment of heart failure after myocardial infarction (MI), in those patients showing signs of congestive heart failure within a few days of the heart attack.
How is this medicine used?
By preventing a chemical reaction that creates constricting of blood vessels, ramipril causes the body to retain less sodium and fluids. The result is a relaxing of the arteries to lower blood pressure.
What if I miss a dose?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.
How is this medicine stored?
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container. Keep away from heat and light.
Are there side effects?
Possible side effects from ramipril include cough, headache, dizziness, low blood pressure, fatigue, and a low incidence of impotence, ringing of the ears, and arthralgia (joint pain). Also listed as possibilities are amnesia (memory loss), hearing loss, skin rash, and abdominal pain.
Are there precautions with this medicine?
Precautions while taking this medicine include the possibility of increased potassium levels (about 1% of patients), and photosensitivity (wear protective clothing or use sunscreens until tolerance is determined). Caution must be exercised in patients with impaired kidney or liver function. Talk to your doctor if you have questions.
Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
Ramipril should not be used during pregnancy due to the possibility of fetal damage. Also, ramipril has been detected in breast milk, so it should not be used while breast-feeding.
Does this medicine interact with other drugs?
Drug interactions with ramipril are possible. Included are antacids and indomethacin, both of which can decrease the blood pressure lowering effect of ramipril; phenothiazine tranquilizers increase the effects of this medicine; and digoxin, lithium, and potassium preparations all showed increased amounts in the blood when given with this group of medicines (ACE inhibitors).
General Information:
This medicine can cause a decrease in zinc in the body. Symptoms of low zinc might include decreased immunity (easier to get sick), acne, anorexia, depression, and joint pain.
